Windows 7 – The Pensar Verdict

As many of you know by now, Microsoft has recently launched its new and improved operating system Windows 7. As usual, Microsoft claim that this version of their operating system is their finest work (who could forget its predecessor Windows Vista!) and that this operating system will deliver a much more robust experience to users.

Pensar has been testing Windows 7 internally for the last 4 months and we can confirm that it does indeed live up to the hype which Microsoft has built up around it.

Some of the main benefits we have found with Windows 7 are:

Great Power Saving

It is by far the most power optimal operating system Microsoft has ever brought to market. Windows 7 allows you to configure your computer so it only uses the necessary power, resulting in significant power (and cost) savings. For example, these power settings could, according to Microsoft, result in up to 30% more battery life for laptops.

Faster Performance

The second notable benefit is its quick load times and improved performance. Windows 7 is a much “lighter” operating system which means it uses much less processing power. This is evident when you bring Windows 7 out of sleep mode on a laptop. With Windows 7 this takes between 1-3 seconds to get to the log on screen whereas before you could make two cups of coffee before the computer was ready to log on.

Improved Compatibility

Windows 7 is also compatible with older Windows applications and can run legacy Windows XP software in a compatibility mode, meaning your legacy applications can upgrade with you.

Better Data Protection

Apart from several aesthetic improvements, Windows 7 also boasts a built in encryption tool to secure your data and an improved backup system to help you back the most necessary files.

In our experience, we conclude that Windows 7 is a marked improvement on its predecessor.

We would however recommend that computers that did not come with Windows 7 should not be upgraded until the first Service Pack has been released. The reason for this is that many of the drivers for older machines might not have been thoroughly tested, and this process is usually complete by the time that the first Service Pack is released.

For new computers that come with Windows 7, we would recommend you ensure that all your software works with Windows 7 (or its compatibility mode) first before buying.
